The Poett and Redington Families

Alfred Poett, Agnes’s brother, laid out numerous local roads in what would become Hillsborough and San Mateo Park. Davenport Bromfield continued this work in 1890, the year he was elected San Mateo County Surveyor.

Both the Poett and Redington families, extended family of Agnes Poett Howard, played large roles in the development of the mid-Peninsula.  For example, it was Dr. Joseph Henry Poett, Agnes Poett Howard’s father, who sold 1,000 acres of land to Anson Burlingame, the city’s namesake.  Her brother Alfred, a civil engineer, laid out numerous city roads.  Her nephew, Arthur Redington, was Hillsborough’s first city attorney.
