Both the Poett and Redington families, extended family of Agnes Poett Howard, played large roles in the development of the mid-Peninsula. For example, it was Dr. Joseph Henry Poett, Agnes Poett Howard’s father, who sold 1,000 acres of land to Anson Burlingame, the city’s namesake. Her brother Alfred, a civil engineer, laid out numerous city roads. Her nephew, Arthur Redington, was Hillsborough’s first city attorney.
